Faith of the Shunammite Woman
Text: 2 Kings 4:9–37
The story of the Shunammite woman is one of the most remarkable demonstrations of faith and spiritual discernment in the Bible. Though she is not named in Scripture, her actions and attitude reveal deep understanding, kindness, and unwavering trust in God.
1. A Woman of Discernment (2 Kings 4:9)
The Bible says, “She perceived that this is a holy man of God.”
This statement shows that the Shunammite woman possessed spiritual discernment. She recognized that Elisha was not just an ordinary traveler but a true servant of God. Spiritual discernment is a gift that enables believers to perceive what others may not easily see. Her perception teaches us that those who walk closely with God can recognize His presence in others. She believed that if the child was placed where God’s anointing rested, something miraculous could still happen. Faith often acts before the miracle appears.
4. A Confession of Hope (2 Kings 4:26)
When Elisha’s servant asked her if all was well, she replied, “It is well.”
Even in deep pain and confusion, she refused to speak negatively. She chose to confess faith rather than fear. Her declaration—“It is well”—was not a denial, but a bold expression of trust in God’s power to turn sorrow into joy. True faith sees beyond present trouble and believes in final victory.
5. A Faith That Refuses to Give Up (2 Kings 4:28–30)
The Shunammite woman persisted. She said to Elisha, “Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me?’” She held firmly to God’s promise and refused to accept defeat. She believed that God does not lie and does not give a blessing only to take it back. Her determination compelled Elisha to follow her, demonstrating that unwavering faith moves God’s servants—and heaven itself—to action.
6. A Heart of Gratitude (2 Kings 4:37)
When her son was restored to life, the Shunammite woman bowed to the ground in thanksgiving. Her gratitude completed her testimony. Many receive miracles and forget to thank God, but she understood that gratitude is the seal of genuine faith.
